Come to Avebury for the launch of a panoply of locative games! Experience history in and around the ancient landscape with games and stories you can play through your smartphone. During the launch, come and chat with some of the developers and see how these mixed reality games were made.
These digital works that have been curated and developed by the Universities of Southampton and Bournemouth, in Collaboration with the National Trust at Avebury. You will be able to download and play many of these experiences in the months and years to come after the launch.
Getting to the Site
Avebury can be reached by car, with parking in the National Trust Carpark, a short walk from the Visitor Reception Barn. Avebury can also be reached by bus, from Swindon, Calne and Marlborough.
Ages of Avebury
Journey into the past with Ages of Avebury. Take on the role of a surveyor, searching for missing stones, still hidden beneath the soil. Uncover the mystery of a disappearing archaeologist. Walk the paths of the people who raised the stones, and the people who destroyed them. See an augmented reality vision of a complete stone circle at Avebury.
Build Your Own Palisades
In the barn, learn about the ancient palisades and build your own wooden henge.
Tales of Flint
Listen to an audio walk that takes you out across the West Kennet avenue of standing stones, over to Silbury Hill and back along the Winterbourne stream. As you walk, listen to a series of six tales spanning from every thousand year span of Avebury: from the Neolithic, to the Bronze Age, through the Iron Age, then Roman Britain, from the mediaeval period to the 1930s. The tales themselves will lengthen and shorten based on your own walking speed.
Avebury Anthology
The Avebury Anthology is a showcase of twenty games from ten different game designers, each bringing their own unique approach to locative games at this ancient cultural heritage site.
