About the Project’s Themes

Ethical Design for Access and Engagement

Lead: UOS
Participants: UOS, BU, ITI, TCD, HRM; NT, CMF, ECCOM, OPW, SGN
Case Studies: Case Studies 1 and 2 (Avebury World Heritage Site); Case Study 3 (Island of Madeira); Case Study 4 (Boyne Valley); Case Study 5 (Senckenberg “Museum for Tomorrow”)

This work package covers the tasks to deliver the five LoGaCulture case studies. These will form the foundation for the experimental work in WP3, WP4, WP5, and WP6, and will be the target for the ethical framework established in WP1. This will occur across three phases each taking one year: design, development, and deployment/evaluation. Each case study will be led by the local academic partner, in close collaboration with the local cultural institution(s), with consolidation and synthesis tasks undertaken by UOS as the work package lead.

Creation and Authoring

Lead: BU
Participants: BU, NT, TCD, OPW, HRM, SGN
Case Studies: Case Studies 1 and 2 (Avebury World Heritage Site; Case Study 4 (Boyne Valley); Case Study 5 (Senckenberg “Museum for Tomorrow”)

This work package covers the project’s commitments to investigating authoring and creation processes and technologies under Theme 2: Creation and Authoring. The research for this package will be conducted principally through CS2 (Avebury Circle), CS4 (Battle of the Boyne and Hill of Tara), and CS5 (Senckenberg Museum for Tomorrow). Methods used in this work package will range from the User Experience (UX) design of prototype tools to co-design and RITE (Rapid Iterative Testing and Evaluation) of those tools as part of the case studies, to expert review, usability studies, and impact evaluations of the tools in the final stages.

Transmedia, Tourism, and Social Games

Lead: ITI
Participants: UOS, NT, ITI, CMF, ECCOMN
Case Studies: Case Studies 1 and 2 (Avebury World Heritage Site); Case Study 3 (Island of Madeira)

This work package will expand current Transmedia Gaming practice, by studying, designing and evaluating novel transmedia narratives and games that engage a wide variety of audiences in single and social visiting of cultural heritage sites. The research for this package will be conducted principally through CS3 (The Island of Madeira) and CS1 (The Avebury Landscape). It will also explore alternative modes of social visiting, by understanding the behaviour of existing visitors to the case study sites, by incorporating these findings into a socially aware visit system for the case studies, and by evaluating its effectiveness. This might be as simple as designing the content around social groups but may also need explicit technology support (for example, to orchestrate multiple devices, or allow asynchronous visiting).

Narrative and Play

Lead: TCD
Participants: BU, NT, ITI, CMF, TCD, OPW, ECCOM
Case Studies: Case Studies 1 and 2 (Avebury World Heritage Site); Case Study 3 (Island of Madeira); Case Study 4 (Boyne Valley)

This work package covers the project’s commitments to investigating the locative game mechanics and associated narrative conventions under Theme 4: Narrative and Play. The research for this package will be conducted principally through CS4 (The Battle of the Boyne and Hill of Tara) and CS3 (The Island of Madeira). It will follow the principles of Initial Research, Development, Evaluation pattern of stages established in WP2. Methods used in this work package will range from UX design of prototype tools to codesign and RITE (Rapid Iterative Testing and Evaluation) of those tools as part of the case studies, to expert review, usability studies, and impact evaluations of the experiences in their final stages.

Immersion and Presence

Lead: HRM
Participants: UOS, NT, HRM, SGN
Case Studies: Case Studies 1 and 2 (Avebury World Heritage Site); Case Study 5 (Senckenberg “Museum for Tomorrow”)

This work package covers the project’s commitments towards accessibility and engagement with regard to a central user experience. The research for this package will be conducted principally through CS5 (Senckenberg Museum For Tomorrow) and CS1 (The Avebury Landscape). It will follow the principal pattern of stages established in WP2, Initial Research, Development, Evaluation, while an iterative design science approach is prevalent in all phases, by “knowing through making” and triangulation of the findings with theory and results from other WPs
